“You get as much as you give”
What is the purpose of our community here at CrossFit Resistance?
Community is the fire that fuels our gym. One of the first captions I ever read at CrossFitResistance.com was “Are you ready to change your life?” I thought to myself with sarcasm, yeah, right, how is a gym going to change my life besides growing my biceps and quads? I couldn’t have been more wrong.
I remember my first day at CFR, Columbus Day 2015, I had just finished a massive pre-workout drink sitting in my car waiting for my former gym to open unaware that they were closed for Columbus Day. I was waiting as patiently as possible for this gym to open as this pre-workout freak of nature storm was brewing in my stomach. Nobody was showing up to open the gym so I walked up to the window and read a note reading, “closed today for Columbus, enjoy your rest.” I WAS NOT READY TO REST, I WAS NOT ENJOYING ANYTHING. I was 25 minutes deep into this pre-workout drink and I knew at 35 minutes my body was going to be ready for work. I googled the closest CrossFit Gym to my location and a few options popped up locally in the Pasadena area, but the first one on the list was some random place called CrossFit Resistance on Raymond Avenue next to Jones Coffee. Now, about 35 minutes post drink, I walked into CFR buzzing-wide-eyed and ready to workout. I yelled at this bald guy named J.B. asking him if he worked here, and If I could workout in the next class. J.B. introduced himself, had me fill out a waiver, and made the arrangements for me to join in on the action.
6:30 group class was starting and the general manager Paolo introduced me to the everyone, “This is Griffin he is dropping in today, please be nice-nice not fake nice, but actually speak to him.” Paolo lead us in a warm-up that was appropriate for the movements being accomplished that day, our class of twenty people worked on power clean to push presses from the ground for about 15 minutes and each lift I did regardless of failing or success, I was coached on how to improve by Coach Paolo and some of the other advanced athletes. The remaining hour class and after was filled with people introducing themselves to me and making small talk with other members. I vividly remember feeling like that was the most welcoming experience I had ever received. The quality of the community, coaching, balance of the workouts, and the overall FUN I had encouraged me to sign up immediately.
I wanted to take full advantage of everything this place had to offer. I knew that I wanted to become a better athlete, I wanted to get to know these people, and I wanted to see if this place could really change my life. I knew that you only get as much as you give, so that is exactly what I set out to do.
The support system at CrossFit Resistance is incredible and so valuable to your fitness journey. Community is the key to success in anything and fitness is no different. The purpose of the community here at CrossFit Resistance isn’t just to meet new people, but to support and suffer through intense workouts. You form a unique bond with someone when you complete a mentally and physically challenging task. It brings you closer and you feel connected with your peers in a different way than any other team building activity.
In my next addition I am going to get into a bit of my experience with mental toughness.
